Mozambique Opposition Leader Receives Death Threats
The former secretary general of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) Ossufo Momade has received death threats from the military wing of the party.
A spokesperson for the group Mariano Nhongo has been quoted as stating, "We don't want Ossufo… If he doesn't want to go, we will kill him... he has destroyed our party."
The military group has also made threats that it will disrupt talks between Momade and the President concerning the disarmament of Renamo. Despite transitioning to a political party following an end to civil was in 1992, Renamo re-armed in 2013 to challenge the ruling Frelimo.
A fragile ceasefire has been in place since 2016.
General elections are scheduled for October 15 this year.
