Malawi Opposition Protesters Tear Gassed

The opposition in Malawi continues to dispute the outcome of the May 2019 presidential elections, with armed police using tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had turned out to protest on Thursday.

The protestors were demanding the resignation of President Mutharika, who was narrowly re-elected in the recent polls, which the opposition claims were rigged. Among the irregularities alleged are the use of correction fluid and results sheet anomalies.

Police spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed the use of tear gas to disperse protestors, which he claimed were turning violent during the third consecutive day of protests. There were also reports of bullets being fired by police, with Kadadzera confirming one accidental shooting.
