DRC Police Fire Tear Gas As Opposition Protest

This weekend saw clashes between the police in Goma and Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and opposition supporters.

The governor  in Goma banned the planned protest, in support of the appeal of the Lamuka opposition coalition against the nullification of the election of twenty of its deputies, last week. Despite the ban opposition chiefs Jean-Pierre Bemba, Martin Fayulu and Adolphe Muzito had publicly stated their intention to proceed with the march.

President Felix Tshisekedi lent his agreement to the governor in deciding to ban the protest, with police warning that any gatherings of more than 10 people would be dispersed.

Some reports claim that one of the protestors died after being admitted to hospital with a gun shot wound.
