Zimbabwe Tourism Minister Sacked

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sacked Tourism Minister Prisca Mupfumira with immediate effect.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) last month detained tourism minister Prisca Mupfumira for questioning.

It was the first time the recently formed commission had detained a senior government official.

According to the commission Mupfumira’s detention was related to abuses of the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) fund uncovered in a recent report from the Auditor General. Before she was appointed to the tourism ministry Mupfumira previously served as public service and labour minister.

Mupfumira also recently featured on a list of corrupt officials published by the Zanu PF Youth League.

Corruption is estimated to cost the Zimbabwean economy around $1 billion annually, according to Transparency International.
