Zimbabwe Doctors Hold Vigil in Solidarity with Kidnapped Union Leader
Doctors in Zimbabwe have vowed to continue with their strike following the abduction of their leader by suspected ZANU-PF agents.
Peter Magombeyi, the acting president of the Zimbabwe Doctors Association was seized by men in what has been viewed as an attempt to intimidate doctors who recently embarked on a strike for increased salaries.
Doctors have said they will continue with industrial action until the government address their concerns and release Magombeyi unharmed.
Outside hospitals doctors can be seen in their lab coats with placards reading ‘Bring back Dr Peter Magombeyi’, ‘no to abductions #incapacitated’ and ‘No peter, no negotiations.’
The government continue to deny their involvement claiming he was at an MDC safe house, a claim vehemently denied by the opposition, including well known politicians and activist David Coltart.
Government at a recent meeting with the doctors' welfare group's representatives, indicated that there was going to be a salary increment of $360 which the health staff dismissed as an insult.
At a recent post cabinet briefing, Health Minister, Obadiah Moyo proposed a law banning future strike actions by health workers, something the ZHDA vowed to challenge.
