Pressure Mounts on Mnangagwa Reshuffle

Senior members of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF and high-ranking military officials are reportedly piling pressure on President Emerson Mnangagwa to have a serious reshuffle of his cabinet.

The speculation mounts as the government has continually failed to address the economic crisis crippling the economy and the country.

Sources have also reported he is under pressure from the Office of the President and Cabinet, who believe the cabinet should be much younger than it currently is.

The faction within the party that originally supported Mnangagwa in his bid to take over from former president Robert Mugabe, led by administration secretary Obert Mpofu, have been holding weekly meetings to discuss the issue.

In response, the president reportedly held meetings with those ministers targeted, including Finance minister Mthuli Ncube, and Home Affairs minister Cain Mathema.

A senior government official said “Although Mthuli [Ncube] is liked by Mnangagwa, he appears to be the one targeted the most by ZAN-PF officials.  They seem to have all lost faith in him.  The army has also been giving out very negative reports about his economic policies of late”.

Mnangagwa’s cabinet has served for just one year, but its critics are already rallying over the state of the country’s economy.
