Mozambique’s First Female Presidential Contender

Maria Alice Mabota is set to become Mozambique’s first female presidential candidate, having filed her papers to contest the October 2019 elections.

Alice Mabota is a lawyer by training, known for her human rights activism and a former president of the Mozambique Human Rights League. 

In running for the presidency she is representing a coalition of six parties, the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD).

Among the other contenders are incumbent President Filipe Nyusi, Renamo’s Ossufo Momade, Mayor of Beira and leader of the Mozambique Democratic Movement Daviz Simango and Party of Optimists for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS) leader Helder Mendonca.
