Virus-free Zimbabwe declares national disaster

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of national disaster in Zimbabwe over the coronavirus pandemic, even though the country is yet to confirm a single case of the disease.

The president has banned all public gatherings of more than 100 people and postponed independence day celebrations scheduled for 18th April.

The ban will see church gatherings, weddings, and sporting events abandoned for at least 60 days.

The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), that was scheduled to take place in the south-western city of Bulawayo from 21st - 25th April, has also been postponed.

President Mnangagwa told reporters that he would not be imposing a travel ban, but strongly discouraged travellers from countries affected by the virus from visiting Zimbabwe.

He also warned Zimbabweans against travelling abroad while the pandemic continues to grow.
