Mozambique: Islamists attack second town in gas-rich region
Islamist militants have attacked a second town in the Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique, where foreign companies are working on a $60bn natural gas project.
The attack on the town of Quissanga came at dawn on Wednesday, just two days after a similar assault on Mocimboa de Praia town in the same region.
Local reports indicate that the district police headquarters was raided and destroyed during the attack. Images circulated on social media show a group of eight masked men posing triumphantly in front of the building.
The attack occurred during a visit by the ministers of defence and the interior to the area. They were dispatched to the province following Monday’s attack.
The two attacks took place against the backdrop of a three-year insurgency in Cabo Delgado in which many hundreds have been killed and thousands displaced from their homes.
