Zambia To Kick Out Investors Who Don’t Pay Taxes
Zambian President Edgar Lungu has warned that those investors who fail to pay their taxes could be kicked out of the country.
His comments come as the government has kicked mining company Vedanta Resources out of the country on the basis that it had breached its licence. Vedanta disputes the claims and is seeking international arbitration in the matter.
President Lungu has warned mining firms in particular that they could face sanctions if they do not operate within the confines of the law.
Meanwhile, the Zambian Chamber of Mines has warned that copper output for 2019 could be down by 100,000 tonnes as a result of changes to the mining tax regime. The government has announced plans to replace the Value Added Tax with a new non-refundable sales tax.
